SEMINAR #6 - "Student-Directed Learning" -
Researched strategies on managing, monitoring and modifying SDL are presented
which ultimately lead to greater cognition through metacognition. It is
assumed that the teacher is "clearly in control" and that specific tools
leading to complete "engagement" are also in practice. Each child can then be
taught how to self-direct their learning. This type of self-direction has
been shown to lead to greater outcomes (greater life chances). This seminar
was created in response to rapidly changing responsibilities of both
professionals and non-professionals in the American work force. Many
assignments are given which require self-directedness. Adults must problem
solve. What makes successful people successful? Can what successful people
do be taught to children? Our students must be prepared to "learn to learn".
They must be given tools so that they can step back, view their own actions,
make corrections and continue toward accomplishment of goals. Only through
this "cognitive awareness" can they truly experience their own
self-actualization. Curriculum supervisors, administrative staff and teachers
are invited to attend this seminar.
